Game Genres (RPG)

The basic definition of RPG is Role Playing Game well known for their entrancing plots and stories

Role playing games have been around for even longer then video games was created with games like Dungeons&Dragons which like in the video games the player can choose from a limited amount of characters (like in this link https://youtu.be/RvyGtx2kIS4?t=74) and venture forth through adventures (as shown in this link here https://youtu.be/TxketWz5Z0c?t=12) with half of the RPG’s being multiplayer so many others can play with them.

RPGs are usually played in worlds of in a fantasy or science fiction setting for example in games like Final Fantasy 7 with its grimy, dirty, smokey steampunk like world setting that a lot of games love for its amazing art.

With RPG’s players can embark on amazing grand and epic adventures with lives that they cant live for themselves.

Like travelling up the tall and falling apart temporal tower in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky to save all of time and space.

For RPGs there is a character selection and with this character selection in most of RPGs there is skills and abilities known to their relevent characters, like in Mabinogi which is an MMORPG has the same option and in both RPG’s they have unique characters/classes like a ‘Ninja’ class that is in Mabinogi the ‘Ninja’ class has unique skills that are unique to its characters class like ‘kunai throwing’ which is a mid-range skill that throws a type of ninja weapon with its own damage type being ‘slash’ damage.

As well as RPG genre games have an inventory which stores items the player collects and uses, for example in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon they have items you can eat to restore health or to rid of status effect, throw which the player would throw a item that could do damage or other uses and use which activates an item which can be an item where you activate it and the player could see enemies around the dungeon.

Quests and missions are very common in an RPG with quests and missions they help develop and progress the characters story throughout the game. Completing quest/missions can gain Experience Points (look at the paragraph below about Experience Points), loot/items or progress into the plot of the story.

To keep an RPG game balanced through their usually long stories they added Experience Points (XP) and Level Up system which once the player has collected enough Experience Points then they level up and usually that comes with levelling up is an increase in statistics the character has, gain abilities that help make the game easier or to help the player or they can get upgrades like an inventory space upgrade which is also common in the RPG genre.

Game Genre (strategy)

Strategy Games are the high intellectual versions of games where you are a commander or builder that helps either build cities, lead armies or basic puzzle games like Tetris.

In the Sims series you are either in charge of building cities or family’s where the objective of the game is to just make your city or family live and thrive any disasters or any other problems. (in the example link shown https://youtu.be/D3KeYlyKB3k?t=1307)

However Sims is a hybrid game which has both the genres of Strategy and Simulator been as as well as the player building either house or city they are also simulating their lives.

There are also games like Advance Wars where you take control of an army and your aim is to outsmart the enemy units and win the battles which requires the player to think of strategies to combat the enemy and their strategies. (https://youtu.be/_E3N3Ydd8JU?t=2571)

Advance Wars is an old game for the Gameboy Advance.

In games like Civilization VI the player can harvest resources like gold, items and other useful items that can go towards structures, armies or upgrades. Harvesting can be found in strategy games to help players build up their resources and they can process through the game’s plot/story/objective.

In Civilization VI with the resources the player has harvested they can build or upgrade units like armies to help defend against or conquer enemies.

In World of Tanks (WoT) which is an action-strategy has a technology tree which can be used by gaining experience or resources and upgrading to make the game easier or to benefit the player its another way of level up been as technology trees can be found in multiple genre of games even in a story line that has multiple endings like Undertale.

With Civilization VI and other strategy games like Advance Wars they have a feature that can deploy armies or units to do other objectives so they are like a weapon to a player however the player only has to say where the units can go or do, so the player is like a general as they have to stay back and control units to do objectives that benefit the player.

With strategy games the player is usually either against another player or AI (Artificial Intelligence), normally the enemy is AI so the player for example would have to capture an enemy base and both player and enemy usually have the same units to fight do battle against each other so the enemy can make the same kind of moves a player would make where their objective would be for example to capture your base.

Strategy games can have real time or turn-based combat which turn-based is where both the player and enemy take turns to move, battle, etc. this gives players more time to come up with a decision while they are waiting for their turn. Real time is where the player has little time to make a decision due to the game play not stopping this gets players to engage more in a strategy game for example if the enemies units are moving to your base while that is happening the player has to come up with a quick strategy to counteract the enemies units.

Game Genre (First-Person Shooter)

First-Person Shooters are one of the most popular games that focus
around gun and other weapon-based combat in a First-Person perspective in most times fast action pact games like Destiny, Call of Duty, Halo and even more First-Person shooters. (https://youtu.be/XjLXvPpNH1c?t=627)

(Example of First-Person shooter (Halo)

In first-person shooters the games done in first-person which is where the player is seeing through the eyes of the character and in games like this it gives a immersive atmosphere which can help a player play the game easier.

With first-person shooters there is always a weapon that shoots, thrown, etc. and few times can be seen how much ammo is contained either with a counter saying how many bullets are left or this can be also seen if the game has a counter on the gun which can be easier for the player because its closer to the cross-hair that is near the middle of the screen and some cases has both a counter on screen and on the weapon where players can either look at the weapon or the counter to see how long till they need to reload.

First-person shooters also are known for having a cross-hair on screen to help a player aim been as some games the player cant look down the barrel of the gun.

Game Genre (Adventure)

Adventure genre follows a main protagonist through a story driven adventure or quest which can contain puzzles solving and exploration.

Most commonly known for its adventure genre is Skyrim with its vast world and quests that are available and can be known as a hybrid been as Skyrim has some First-Person shooter like appearance that can be changed from First-Person to Third-Person at will. (https://youtu.be/HsVqIXusKCI?t=736)

There is also many times Adventure is used with other genres like Tomb Raider and Professor Layton which both have puzzle solving like adventure to them.

(As shown in this picture of gameplay from Professor Layton)

In an adventure game they have an open world like in Legend of Zelda Breath of The Wild were there is a big world full of enemies, dungeons, etc. and in these open worlds the player can explore the big open world been as adventure games have a big world to explore which could contain loot and enemies.

Adventure genre games have a narrative driven objective which gives the player an objective which they can go through this can be done through talking to NPCs (Non-Player Characters) or found for example piece of paper in bottle that has washed up on a shore of a beach.

They can also have puzzle elements within the game like in most of the Tomb Raider games where the player has to find out how to beat the puzzle in a temple full of traps and contraptions.

With Legend of Zelda Breath of The Wild and other Adventure games they have item selection or inventory management where in games like Minecraft this can help the player store items to be able to get to quickly like a switching from a bow to a sword for when an enemy comes to close and cant be shot.

Game Genres (Action)

With the Action game genre they include physical challenges which needs hand–eye coordination and reaction-time to complete.

This is most commonly done in the Action genre by adding QTE (Quick Time Events) which the player must fulfil and action on the controller to progress the character which requires both hand eye co-ordination and reaction time like in Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 boss fights. (https://youtu.be/HjSUb0Ri6OI?t=925) this can also be commonly known in most anime Action games like One Piece and Asura’s Wrath.

Another way QTEs can be done is with what can be called ‘twitch gaming’ where the player can subconsciously click a button without much effort and muscle memory which in an action genre game could save the players life for example when the player is fighting and then they have to quickly click a button to block or defend against it which can be done through ‘twitch gaming’ and the player instantly click a button this can be done in QTE’s if they have predictable patterns or an easy speed for the player to read the button command needed to press.

A key skill in action games is hand-eye coordination which is needed in action games for needing to spot slight details in a map or how a player moves for example if a enemy stops shooting to throw a grenade then this gives the player time to shoot the enemy throwing the grenade and if done quick enough can be turned into an advantage if they are other enemies in that area.

Accurate timing is needed in an action game where one button could take away a life from a player or in other cases like reloading a gun at a good time when in cover or when given enough time and not when you in the middle of a gunfight where the player can be punished for not getting the timing right with a loss of a character life.

Game Genre (Rhythm)

The Rhythm genre is made to be challenging on the mind to keep up with the rhythm and actions like a Quick Time Event but its the entire game.

Games like Hatsune Miku Project Diva even go a step further and add control stick movement so instead of just button pressing to the rhythm, games like Hatsune Miku Project Diva do this to increase their difficulty and to have the players contribute more to their characters actions like arm movement and other movements (https://youtu.be/a1XF0kswre0?t=88)

(Another example of Rhythm game is Taiko no Tatsujin)

With rhythm games there is always a beat or song which can be followed by how the layout of the game is on screen with the buttons the player needs to press on screen which contrasts from what is going on in the background.

In a rhythm game there will normally be a “ok”, “good”, “great” and “perfect” etc. on each note or button that has been pressed at the time which then depending on how the they are scored from bad to good the more points you would get as the tier goes up.

Sometimes in a rhythm game they can end the game if the player hasn’t kept with the beat/tempo of the song and making the player redo the song this can be seen in games like Guitar Hero and Taiko no Tatsujin, this adds more difficulty to the game.

Game Genre (MMO)

MMO genre is also know as massively multiplayer online is a game genre that is held on a massive server which upon thousands of players.

In these MMO servers they can be a wide range of sub genres in MMO’s like action, fantasy and many more one of these for example is a MMO called Mabinogi which is a fantasy MMO where you do quests, explore the continent, transfer goods and trades, set up your own store and do raids. Also Mabinogi has a wide range of classes from gunslinger, ninjas, archers, holy arts, medicine, tailoring and many more with a nice detailed character customisation. (https://youtu.be/n0lqAU7OlKA?t=20)

(These images are the classes that are currently available in Mabinogi and where collected from (https://wiki.mabinogiworld.com/view/Talent)

In an MMO genre game they are held within game servers that houses multiple players so this gives opportunities to group and do missions that can’t be done by themselves and which also eases the difficulty of the mission.

The MMO genre also has a ‘never ending’ story to them which only a few players in a server have come close t completing however there are games like World of Warcraft which has a very long story to it and also still increasing expansions to the game.

A common event to happen in the MMO genre games are raid events which a lot of players gather and do this one mission or quest that has huge boss or hard objective to complete which can be bad for some players in MMO’s due to them may not have a right amount of player to join with.

Game Genre (Puzzle)

Puzzle games are like strategy games however instead of coming up with a plan to win a war or build a city, puzzle games also test the players
ingenuity or knowledge but puzzle games are played with either maths or or pieces that fit together to continue.

An example of a puzzle game is one of the most popular and one of the most challenging puzzles which is Tetris which you fit the blocks together to form a line and clear rows to stay in the game trying to prevent the blocks from reaching the top all done with music that speeds up the higher the stack gets and the blocks automatically drops giving the player a short time to rotate and place the blocks.

Puzzle games like Tetris has huge popularity to the point there’s many created spin off’s like Poyo Poyo Tetris and Dr.Mario. However they both and most other Tetris spin off’s have their own quirks to them like how Dr.Mario levels start with a nearly full level of pieces and Poyo Poyo Tetris has multiplayer, use of the old version of Tetris, characters and many other quirks.

The primary objective for game to be problem solving and other puzzles for example how in Tetris which focuses purely on puzzles.

Physic-based puzzles are puzzles the player needs to physically move an item or object for the puzzle to be operated which can be done from moving block from point A to point B and completes the puzzle.

Logic-Based puzzles are puzzles that the player has limited times or a limited amount of times they can move before they fail the puzzle this can be seen in games like Bejeweled and Tetris.

Matching puzzles are nice simple puzzle depending on how the matchmaking has been done for example in Skyrim a dungeon could contain a ‘match three’ to open a gate this can be done with finding the matching pictures that the player can find in their surroundings.

Word-based puzzles are puzzles where the player has to either guess a word or match a word to win which can be done with on screen hints or if matching letters to make a word then the player can shuffle the words around till they see a word or get an idea for a word the letters can make and move on to the next.
